Do You Need CEU’s?

CASACA announces its 2011 CEU Seminar, to be held Thursday November 3 from 8am to 5pm.

Titled ‘Ahead of the Curve: Increasing Your Professional Value’, the seminar offers participants the opportunity to earn up to 8 CEU’s in just one day.

All sessions will be held at:

Cost

Cost for the full 8 sessions is $100 ($120 for non-CASACA members). Participants requiring fewer CEU’s may sign up for 1-3 sessions for $75. To register and reserve your place, please complete and return the Registration Form with your payment.

This seminar serves to enlighten activity professionals in ways to increase their profession’s value through a collaboration with their facility’s restorative nursing program to improve the lives of the residents and maximizing reimbursement through effective and ethical documentation,  to educate the activity professional on ways to improve their image in the facility and to motivate them to advocate for their profession.

Session Schedule

8:00 am – 8:15 am: Registration and coffee.

8:15 am – 9:15 am:
Session 1 – October 2011 MDS Changes – How to Help Make Up the Difference

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Communicate to their restorative nurse their knowledge and desire to assist.
  • Identify appropriate activities that support restorative nursing goals.
  • Document and/or communicate results of sessions with restorative nursing.

9:15 am – 10:15 am:
Session II – Resident and Family Councils – No more mystery – Just Facts!

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate regulatory knowledge regarding resident and family councils.
  • Create and implement effective councils in their own community.
  • Provide guidance to existing councils on purpose and goals of the council.

10:15 am – 10:30 am: Break.

10:30 am – 11:30 am:
Session III – Immediate Jeopardy – What You Don’t Know Can Hurt Your Department.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a better understanding of federal and state regulations.
  • Evaluate their program effectively.
  • Apply information gained to enhance current programming.

11:30 am – 12:30 pm (Working Lunch):
Session IV – Technology for the Activity Professional – Work Smart, Not Hard!

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Articulate how technology saves time and money for the department.
  • Identify ways to use technology to improve marketing of the department and facility.
  • Demonstrate increased professionalism through the use of technology.

12:30 pm – 1:30 pm:
Session V – The Passing of a Resident – How to Say Goodbye.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the grief process.
  • Identify support groups and services available to residents and staff.
  • Implement ideas learned to use as coping mechanisms.

1:30 pm – 2:30 pm:
Session VI – Conflict Resolution – Creating an Atmosphere of Collaboration.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Articulate what conflict resolution means.
  • Identify successful ways to resolve conflict.
  • Utilize techniques learned to create an atmosphere of collaboration.

2:30 pm – 2:45 pm: Break.

2:45 pm – 3:45 pm
Session VII – Floor Game Fiasco – Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Implement five new floor games into their activity program.
  • Utilize an activity analysis to adapt an activity.
  • Promote an atmosphere of fun in your community.

3:45 pm – 4:45 pm
Session VIII – The Universal Worker – A Call for Action!

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of the universal worker.
  • Identify ways to improve the value of the activity professional.
  • Utilize resources to advocate for the activity profession.

4:45 pm – 5:00 pm

Presenters

Jeff Brown, CTRS, TRS/TXC, ACC
Jeff has over eight years of experience in long-term care and four years of experience in adult education. He is a certified Recreation Therapist on a state and national level. He also maintains certification as an activity consultant with NCCAP. He teaches the MEPAP 2nd Edition curriculum at Austin Community College and works as a Life Enrichment Director at Gracy Woods II Nursing Center in Austin, Texas. He is also President of CASACA.

Maggie Gallant, AD/TXC
Maggie has over 10 years of experience in computers and technology. Her expertise in presentation and publishing software has been utilized by various organizations to include CASACA and Gracy Woods II. She is certified as an activity director with the Consortium for Therapeutic Recreation and Activity Certification in Texas and has two years experience in long-term care. She recently received the award for Activity Assistant of the Year from the Texas Health Care Association and the newsletter which she provided the technological expertise for won Newsletter of the Year from the same association. She has also redesigned the website for CASACA and their program for the Games for Life. She recently served as the 2011 Chair of the Games for Life in Austin, Texas.

Tammy Massey, ADC, AD/TXC
Tammy has over eight years of experience in long-term care and four years of experience in adult education. She is certified as an activity director on a state and national level. She works as an activity director at West Oaks Nursing and Rehab and serves as the 2nd Vice President of CASACA whose duties are to serve as the Educational Chair for the organization. She has presented throughout the state the Texas on various subjects pertaining to long-term care.
