- The Games for Life is open to all residents of long term care (skilled nursing facilities, nursing homes, assisted living).
- The Games provides a powerful example to every other major city in how to create dynamic life enrichment opportunities for long-term care residents.
- 2011 was the biggest year yet, with a combined 550 long term care residents from 33 facilities competing in Austin and San Antonio.
- Events test and reward both physical and mental skill, with an emphasis on fun and the message that ‘you’re never too old to play”.
- Competitive challenges include volleyball, shot-put, wheelchair races, spelling, dominos, and arts and crafts. Some events are modified from their traditional format to eliminate ability and mobility obstacles.
- Participants compete in both individual and team events for medals, bragging rights and the ultimate team title of Grand Champion.
- Many long term care facilities run training programs to help residents prepare for the Games. Competitive pride is strong!
- In 2011, Games for Life competitors ranged in age from 35 to 103.
- Over 1000 volunteers supported the 2011 Games. A similar number will be needed to make 2012 a success.
- In 2012, the Games will expand to Temple for the first time. The Games for Life in Temple are being tentatively scheduled for September 2012.
- The Games for Life are funded by CASACA members, business sponsorships and private donations.
